Pioneer Teacher Tool Kit
Learning Outcomes
At Hartley, students can visit the past and experience some of the differences between yesterday's way of life and today's. We will journey outdoors to Hartley's own 125-year-old Pioneer Cabin. During this 2 ½ hour class period the students will be immersed in activity that includes as many of the tasks the pioneers engaged in their daily living as possible. Hopefully, students will have a greater appreciation and understanding of the Pioneer way of life.
Outside Learning and Exploration Opportunities
Gather some sticks from your yard. Can you build a small Pioneer cabin with them? What materials would make the cabin better?
Writing Prompts
Informative: After one year on a new homestead, your family has built a sturdy, one-room log cabin. Describe this room on a
winter evening, using your senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Use some facts from your Hartley experience in the Pioneer cabin to describe the room.
Narrative: The government is giving you 160 acres of free land. You will need to move hundreds of miles away. Write a story about your journey to this new land.
