Several hands-on activities will help students learn the pioneer way of life as they explore the Schroeder log home.

Students find themselves practicing survival skills as they experience a “life or death” survival situation.
Coal Mine No. 8
Visit Hartley's coal mine ruins and museum while learning about the importance of coal in Michigan history.
Hatchet Survival
This class correlates elements of the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen while teaching students the same type of skills they read about.
Archeology
With this treasure hunt into the past, you'll never know what could be found. They will excavate on the site of the old Bancroft Boarding House while they learn the exciting History of Hartley's past.
Lumberjacks
Learn the important role the lumber industry had in Michigan while competing in the Lumberjack Olympics.
Nature Photography
Learn what it takes to make a great photo. Students will get to practice learned skills around our property.
Archery In Motion
Students learn the basics of archery and motion and then practice their skills with a certified instructor.
Fossils & Coal Mine
Introduction to fossils and history of the No. 8 Coal Mine
Energy: Renewable vs. Non-Renewable
Students will explore the pros and cons of renewable and nonrenewable energy production by conducting hands-on experiments.
Nature Spies
Students will assist in collecting and identifying species on the property using observation and exploration skills.
Michigan Mammals
Students will learn of some amazing mammal adaptations and scout out evidence of mammals on the property.
Aquatic Ecology
Students will learn about Michigan aquatic ecosystems as they collect organisms and monitor water quality with scientific testing.
